Preconception 1st plan
Folic acid is a B vitamin that is needed to convert the amino acid methionine to cysteine. If a woman has enough folic acid in her body at least 1 month before and during pregnancy, it can help prevent major birth defects in the baby’s brain and spine. As If this vitamin is deficient, or if a defect exists in the enzymes responsible for this conversion, there will be increased levels of homocysteine, which is an amino acid by-product that builds up in the body, damaging the lining of the blood vessel and harming the cardiovascular system. Thus it helps prevent neural tube defects when taken prior to becoming pregnant and during early pregnancy.
